NARS – Nurses Assigned in Rural Service

In line with the pump priming strategies to mitigate the impact of the global financial crisis, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo launched the Nurses Assigned in Rural Service (NARS) Project on 9 February 2009 during the Multi-Sectoral Summit on “Joining Hands Against the Global Crisis” in Malacanan Palace, Manila. The NARS Program, a Training cum Employment Program, aims to address the (1) glut in inexperienced nurses and the proliferation of “volunteer nurses” working in hospitals without being paid, but instead, they themselves pay the hospitals to obtain Certificate of work experience; and (2) to promote health of the people and bring the government closer to them.   Unemployed nurses will be mobilized in their hometowns as warriors for wellness to do the three I’s: * Initiate primary health, school nutrition, maternal health programs, first line … Read entire article »

February 2009 Physicians Licensure (Board) Examination Results

The result of the Philippine Physicians Licensure (board) Examination which was held in Manila, Cebu, and Davao on February 8, 9, 15 & 16, 2009 has been released by the PRC. See below for the full list of passers:The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 1,083 out of 1,685 passed the Physician (Complete, Prelims and Finals with Prelims) Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medicine in the cities of Manila and Cebu this February 2009. The results were released in two (2) working days from the last day of examinations. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Loud snoring which is interrupted by respiratory arrest (apnea) of more than 10 secs in duration is obstructive sleep apnea. This is usually accompanied by a reduction in blood oxygen saturation followed by a microawakening to breath. In severe cases, hundreds of breathing pauses can occur every night. In obstructive apnea, the throat closes during inhalation due to excessive relaxation of the pharynx muscles and the floor of the mouth, accompanied by increased tissue pressure from outside. House may soften on cheaper medicines bill

The House of Representatives may soften its stand on the controversial cheaper medicines bill. In an interview, Speaker Jose de Venecia urged the proponents of the Cheaper Medicines Act to consider the request of doctors to remove the provision on the “prescription of generic names of drugs.” De Venecia already said he talked to the principal author of the bill, Iloilo Rep. Ferjenel Biron, to open a dialogue with doctors. “I talked to him [Biron] over the phone to consider or include the request of the doctors in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and in Metro Manila,”de Venecia said. But de Venecia said that doctors should also appeal to senators since the bill will be acted upon by the both chambers of Congress.
